Abstract

Background: Sleep is a vital biological process that sustains and nourishes the body. Ayurveda considers it one of the three pillars of life. Sleep deprivation can affect both physical and mental health. In the present scenario, our society demands round-the- clock services in order to meet their needs. Hence, to meet these long and variable working hours, shift workers have to compromise their sleep. This results in an alteration in their circadian rhythm and may cause a shift in internal homeostasis. The excellence in internal homeostasis is termed as Ojas in Ayurveda. Do sleep problems cause any issues in the status of ojas? Will it trigger any health issues in further course? We have certain subjective measures to evaluate the status of ojas. In this study, an attempt is made to assess the status of ojas in IT professionals who are working night shifts, through a cross-sectional method. Objective: To assess the impact of ratrijagarana on Ojas in IT professionals. Materials and Methods: The study included two groups- Group 1 and Group 2. Group 1 included IT professionals who were working night shifts and having nocturnal sleep of less than 3 hours per day. Group 2 included IT professionals with more than 6 hours of nocturnal sleep. Ojas was assessed using the tool for critical evaluation of the status of ojas. Data was collected from the subjects through the Google form format of the proforma. Results: Ratrijagarana did not have any significant impact on Ojas in our fixed sample.
